As the Coronapocalypse continues to take its human toll with suffering and death as well as its psychological and emotional toll through quarantine and social distancing, the most lasting toll of all is likely to be the institutional toll it takes on what we once considered normal.
If you have any doubt that things are incredibly different than just a month ago and likely to continue that way for the foreseeable future, take a trip to your nearest mall, put on your COVID-19 face mask, and take a look around. What you won’t see is shoppers and sales. What you will see is closed stores, jobs lost, and a retail industry on the verge of collapse.
It remains to be seen how much of this brave new world will become a permanent part of our daily lives.
