Wondering what is WonderCon?

WonderCon is an annual comic book, science fiction, and pop culture convention that takes place in Anaheim, California. It is organized by Comic-Con International, the same organization behind the famous San Diego Comic-Con.

WonderCon features a wide variety of programming and events, including panels and presentations featuring creators and celebrities from the world of comics, television, and film, as well as exhibitors showcasing their latest products and merchandise.

The convention attracts thousands of fans each year, many of whom come dressed in elaborate costumes inspired by their favorite characters. WonderCon typically takes place over three days in the spring, usually in March or April.

WonderCon has a rich history dating back to its origins in the 1980s. Here is a brief timeline of some of the key events:

1987: The first WonderCon was held in the Oakland Convention Center in Oakland, California. The event was organized by a group of fans who wanted to create a convention dedicated to comics and science fiction.

2001: WonderCon was acquired by Comic-Con International, the organization behind the San Diego Comic-Con. The convention was moved to the Moscone Center in San Francisco, where it would remain for the next decade.

2006: WonderCon reached a milestone as it celebrated its 20th anniversary.

2012: WonderCon was forced to relocate from the Moscone Center to the Anaheim Convention Center due to construction in San Francisco. The convention has been held in Anaheim ever since.

2020: The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of WonderCon for the first time in its history.

2021: WonderCon was held virtually due to the ongoing pandemic, featuring a lineup of virtual panels and presentations.

Over the years, WonderCon has grown to become one of the largest conventions of its kind, attracting fans from around the world. The convention has also become an important platform for creators and artists, helping to launch the careers of many up-and-coming talents in the industry.

Why It Matters.

Aside from the obvious opportunity to totally geek out for several days every March, WonderCon matters for several reasons:

  • It celebrates popular culture. WonderCon is an event that brings together fans of comics, movies, TV shows, and video games. It is a place where people can celebrate their love for popular culture and share their interests with like-minded individuals.

  • It provides a platform for creators. WonderCon features panels and presentations with creators and artists, giving them a platform to showcase their work and interact with fans. This allows creators to build a following and gain exposure for their work.

  • It promotes diversity and inclusivity. WonderCon is known for being a welcoming and inclusive event that celebrates diversity. The convention provides a space for people from all backgrounds to come together and share their love for pop culture.

  • It supports the industry. WonderCon provides a platform for exhibitors to showcase their products and merchandise, helping to support the industry and create opportunities for businesses.

  • And, of course, it puts on display for public consumption one of the world’s biggest assemblies of recognizable intellectual property all in one place (with the exception of San Diego Comic-Con and a few other comic book conventions).

Overall, WonderCon matters because it provides a space for people to come together and celebrate their shared love for popular culture while supporting creators and businesses in the industry.
